Position Overview

IDPH is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as Suicide Prevention Coordinator. This position participates in suicide prevention strategic planning, grant management, fiscal monitoring of grantees, program evaluation, and other suicide prevention related guidance to grantees and partners for the Violence and Injury Prevention Section within the Illinois Department of Public Health, Office of Health Promotion, Division of Emerging Health Issues.

Essential Functions

• Under general direction, prepares, organizes, and serves as the lead for suicide prevention related initiatives.
• Coordinates a state-wide suicide prevention public private partnership.
• Coordinates and prepares planning documents, assists with grant applications for funding.
• Completes management studies.
• Recommends policies for the administrative process of suicide prevention program functions which includes budget analysis and preparation, program development and/or expansion, health education strategies, and public relations; stimulates change related to suicide prevention through policy, enforcement, and education.
• Serves as liaison on statewide inter-agency committees addressing suicide prevention needs and resources; develops, reviews, and disseminates information related to suicide prevention to the community, other professionals, key policy makers, and leaders through diverse community networks.
• Directs and coordinates program activities of student interns.
• Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

• Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of college, preferably with courses in business or public administration.
• Requires two (2) years of responsible administrative experience in a public or business organization.

Preferred Qualifications

• Extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of suicide prevention.
• Thorough knowledge of strategies for successful staffing of outcome focused committees and workgroups.
• A Bachelor’s degree with course work in public administration, public health, behavioral health, social work, or a related field.
• One (1) year experience assisting with developing linkages with potential suicide-related data sources and surveillance systems. 
• One (1) year experience developing and maintaining successful collaboration with agencies dealing with suicide prevention and control.
• One (1) year experience with projects requiring application of analytical/quantitative skills.

Conditions of Employment
